Lula and Daslu
Daslu, a luxury department store for the Brazilian wealthy in São Paulo was raided by the Brazilian Federal Police and Tax agents yesterday (story at Bloomberg . One of the owners was arrested by the police, but was out after 10 hours or so. (For a background on Daslu, see this Christian Science Monitor piece )
What annoys me in the story, is the response of the FIESP (Industry Federation of São Paulo):
‘A prisão antecipada, sem sentença, seja qual for sua natureza, só pode ter lugar para os infratores perigosos que ameaçam a ordem pública, que causam prejuízos irreparáveis à sociedade e à própria segurança dos processos judiciais’
(translation: The anticipated arrest, without sentence, whichever its nature, only can have place for the dangerous infractors that threaten the public order, that causes irreparable damages to the society and the proper security of the judicial processes.)
1 commentAbout political analysis
Whoever frequents this site, and follows Brazilian politics at all, must think it is awkward that a site dedicated to Brazilian politics makes no reference to the current crop of scandals stories involving members of the Lula government.
Well, I have a confession to make: I am not a very good political analyst. I need to gather data, test models, and think over the issues before making any statement (at least in writing!) So, even though I plan to address at least in passing the “Mensalão” (practice of delivering monthly payments to deputies supportive of the government coming from a misterious source), I don’t plan do it here. But keep on reading this entry if you want to know how I think this site can help you understand Brazilian politics.

No commentsLinking IBGE to TSE databases
As promised, I have been working on linking TSE (electoral) data to IBGE (maps, census, etc) data by using municipalities names. They are very far from consistent, so I created some adhoc programs in Stata that seem to work quite well. The strategy was to strip all accents and “extra” words like “de”. “da”, state names, and merge using the processed names state by state.
